Default Washing the engine

Ok, so I noticed when I was pulling my plugs that there is SO MUCH dirt on the engine, that if I don't get the plugs directly into the hole, then I hafta spend a few minutes wiping all the oily grime off. So I figured it's time to wash it (don't think it was EVER washed in 20 years).

So I know to be careful for and electrical connections...But what exactly do I need to cover, and what should I use to wash the engine? Should I hose it right down, or should I just rag it and blow the dirt and water out of recessed areas?

I used engine degreaserand simple green. I covered the distributor cap and cleaned mine at a car wash with the engine cool and running. My buddy did similar but had his engine off and could not get it started. I got my info from the detail man at my buddies car lot. I am not an expert but just letting you know what I did.

I dont cover anything on mine.

just dont spray elect. stuff directly and let
dry over nite before turning anything on.

maybe disconnect battery ground if you're really worried about it.

So should I use a hose and hose off the entire engine and leave the car site, or are the older connections not that tight and will let some soap disrupt some stuff?

Just curious how do you have a cold, running engine. Unless you live at a car wash, im doubting the engine is cold...

If you use a pressure washer, be careful with the factory decals or stickers in the engine compartment. (like the emissions sticker or belt diagram) I need to replace most of mine...I mean....somebody I know.

I think it would be nice to still have those. I mean... one of my friends thinks it would be nice.

The car wash is 2 blocks away from my house. I am there 1 minute after my car is started. Does that answer your question

Default RE: Washing the engine

There are a few different ways/steps to do it but this is how I do it.

1) Cover the distributer with a plastic sandwich bag (or a little bigger) and than zip tie the bottom of it. Than cover the maf w/ seran wrap or something like that.

2) Spray the engine bay with 2-3 bottles of purple power/simple green. I have dont this a few times but have not used simple green yet but I have heard its better. Everytime I use purple power it seems to corode the metal.. its forms a white power/dust on the metal brackets after you wash it.

3) Let it sit for 10 mintues

4) Powerwash it off.

5) Spray tire shine on plastic parts.

6) Close hood and let it run for a few mintues after the tire shine is dry (or close to it).

7) DONE.
