Damn this is an old thread. I'm carbed,no puter. I dont run a stat in mine even though i've thought about it. But my car runs so cool, i have manual fans and keep the temp between 160-175.

The thermostat lets the water sit in the rad so it has time to cool off. With no thermostat the water will keep moving through without cooling good and on hot days it will keep heating up until you overheat. That is also the problem if you run too cool of a thermostat.

If the cooling system does not have the capacity to keep the engine within op temp, with a constant flow condition (= no t-stat), the cooling system has a fault. I work a lot of OBD-II cases that have their t-stat removed elsewhere, and end up reinstalling one, but to correct other problems.......like OD/Lockup application, due to the "overcooling" condition they fall in.
