I use High Temp Red Silicone no gaskets at all just the stuff at the part store. It has been 3 years since my headers has been off and still no keaks. I used it on my DD cavalier, my bro-in-laws 5.0 we just did a cam swap in, my 4-wheeler, a truck at work, none of them hav exhaust leaks at ALL. I got the idea from a friend that uses it on all his cars and his circli track cars. It really works.

i have that cheap gasket that comes with the bbk headers, i use nickelseize on both sides of the gasket and ive never had any trouble with it, the nickelseize is right by the copper spray at autozone for like $5 and its in a container thatll last a long time. my dad uses that stuff at work on gaskets that go on boilers. try that.

If you have aftermarket heads, have bigger ports than the gasket. it might be eating it up from the inside out

With the high temp red silicone do the headers have to come completely off? i have a leak on the passenger side and it was hell getting those in (mainly because of my lack of the right tools) but with the silicone can i just loosen the headers and apply them with the gaskets in there as well? i know austin said thathe doesnt use gaskets at all, just the silicone. Theyre the stock bbkgaskets that came with the shortys.. thanks everyone

or hell if anyone has any other ideas of how to fix the leak without taking them completely off that would be great too. (i'll take the headers off if theres no other way- im not trying to rig my car, just seeing if theres an easier way before i put a day aside to wrestle with the header bolts)

k i finally blew my passenger one out because the bolt came really loose and i forgot to check. search google for stage 8 bolts, there locking bolts that wont back out from vibration or heat. as far as header gasket your best bet is to either go with your stock manifold gaskets which are really good, or goto autozone for $17.99+ tx the part number is #5930. its the header gaskets i use now wiht the stage8 bolts, its made by mr. gasket. just go in autozone and go down the performance isle(usually has all kind of msd crap, neon lights etc.)

take the header loose from the head and from the mid pipe. move it out of the way enough to check the header flange with a straight edge. also make sure you dont have too long a bolt or anything in the bolt hole that would be keeping you from getting a good torque on the header.
