Leave it in drive, if you got one done right then when you hammer it , it should shift at around 5000 or 5500 and i dont know why anyone would want to rev a 5.0 any higher then that between shifts unless its a stroker.

Not that I do it unless on the dyno where I'm trying to get exact numbers... but my 302 will pull strong all the way to the redline. Normally, it shifts around the 5200 mark though.

LoL, I wish I could rev it a bit higher because I'd really like to see what the numbers will look like. But I know it's not a good idea. And if I change the setup so that I can rev higher, then the numbers are gonna change anyway.

I think if you manually shift your aod you will most likelyburn out your bands more than anything. One of my friends has a shift kit and he still manually shifts it. The shift kit makes quicker, harder shifts for you, and by manually shifting it you just gain rpms, which could give you a slight edge over just leaving it in drive.
My buddy also has gone through three trannys in the last few years, so do what you want. But like PX429 said don't neutral drop it and that is whatmy friendalways did, along with reverse burnouts. He would floor it in neutral and drop it into reverse. He would also throw it into neutralbefore a cornerthen once he was in the middle of the turn he'd drop it in gear and fishtail it.Just to let you guys know he wasn't the one paying for the new trannys, his parents happen to be rich.
