Default 3g Alternator wiring question

In the tech article I read it says to use 4ga. wire, can I get by with 8 ga. or can I just tie in where ever the pigtail I got from the junk yard reaches. The wiring I have didn't come from a Mustang and isn't long enough to go all the way around the front of the radiator but it still has the fusible links on it.
