Just bought an 84, need help

I just bought an 84 5.0 CFI AOD vert. I've been told that T can't do much to go faster with the CFI and EEC IV. I'm old school, I'd like to put a cam in it, shorty headers, and a carb.Question I have is, EEC just controls fuel and spark, right? Can I get a MSD dist and box and disconnect the EEC?

yes you can gunna have to get a new gas tank and fuel pump too
