Default TKO 600 Install

Well I'm tired of messing with t5's, decided to go tremec. I was interested in an astro performance g force but have been hearing bad things about them and I really don't wanna spend close to what I would for a tremec to have it break on me. So I searched this one already but couldn't find n e thing. What all is involved in the tremec swap? I've heard bellhousing, 26 spline clutch, different spline yolk, shortened driveshaft?, and some kind of mount modification. Any help would be appreciated seeing as how I'm doing this in a 65 but I figure most of the info should still apply. Thanks guys.

Sounds like you have it pretty much covered. I have a TKO 600 and love it. Some people complain about it being hard to shift at high RPM's, i have never had any trouble and i shift at 6600. Alot of people also complain about it not going in third gear. The only reason for that is people try to shift it like a t-5. First gear is farther to the left than normal, when you shift into second the gear is slightly to the right of first,so when you shift into third jam it straight up it shifts great. If you try to feather it a little to the right while shifting into third you will grind between third and fifth every time. I did it several times and still do if i am driving easy. I dont know what kind of power you have but i love the spec clutches. I am running a stage 3 but i have heard good things about the 2+.I am running the stock shifter but have driven tko's with the pro 5.0 and i am going to get one. I think you already know but you need the tremec 3550 bell housing.

Yeah, I love my 600, I have it in my 87GT. I have the stock shifter on there, but am upgrading to a MGW. I would call D&D Motorsports. They are so helpful with the tremec add on questions I had. You can also get the yolk fom them for the Driveshaft. I ordered the bell housing from them too. I have a McLeod Stage 3 clutch.I love it! it engages smoothly, and is very streetable, while having great clamp load on the disc for high power levels. I dont have a clue on the mount modification or the driveshaft length. I could still use the stock length driveshaft in my 87 GT. Hope this helps.

I have one as well. I didnt have to get a shorter driveshaft for mine it fit perfect. As for the mount modification you will need to modify the transmission crossmember. Their are little welds that hold the crossmember to the bushings that you have to grind off in order to slide the crossmember back. I didnt have a welder so as soon as i got the trans in i just took it over to a muffler shop and had it welded up. Its really not that difficult i did the whole thing by myself and had never took a transmission out or replaced a clutchbefore

So you actually have to relocate the crossmember?

TKO 600 here.

You will need .....................

new bellhousing
new clutch for 26spline input shaft
new yoke.
I used stock length alum. driveshaft and it worked fine, but when my tuner looked at he
said it really needed to be shortned about 3/4" to be perfect.

Cross-member:
1. you can cut the welds on the stock one and slide it back a couple of inches and re-weld
2. or get the $100 swap x-member from 50resto.com like i did.
down side on swap x-member is it's a solid mount, no rubber at the
bolts that mount it to the frame, but it bolts right up and everything fits perfect.
No big deal, but I do notice a good bit more vibration thru the shifter handle
but only at very high speed (90+mph)

Good trans, little klunky going into gear, but has a nice positive engagement feel to it.
