AC not turning on

AC not turning on
I have a 1988 mustang gt. My air conditioning has suddenly stopped turning on when my engine is on. However, whenI just turn the key and have power to the accessories the air conditioning turns on fine. Sometimes I can get theAC to turn on by shutting the engine and starting it up again a few times and then it will run fine with the engine on. Summer time in Arizona is bad news without air conditioning.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

RE: AC not turning on
You might wanna check you low pressure switch for the ac system. Its mounted on top of one of the AC lines back near the firewall on the passenger side. With the engine running and AC set to turn on, remove the connector from the switch and jump the two terminals with a wire or something. If your ac clutch engauges either your system is low on refrigerent or your low pressure switch is bad. If you ac compressore still doesn't kick on you might wanna look into the clutch switch mounted on the compressor.

If not it could be either the low pressure switch or the clutch.
If it spins and you're not getting cooling, it's not either of those.
Check the air gap on the A/C Clutch with a set of feeler gauges. It should be somewhere between 0.013 to 0.025" any greater and the clutch won't be able to engage properly.
