Did you burp the system after you installed the thermostat. You could just have an air pocket.

Have you ever used stop leak in your coolant system? I tore down an engine of mine that I once used stop leak on as there was an odd seam crack in my aluminum radiatorI couldnt seem to fix manually. When I tore down the engine the stop leak fluid had stopped the radiator leak from beforebut I was horrified thatit had also stuck tomy head gasketswhere the water jacketsgo into/out of the cylinder head. Every water passage was completely blocked off with dried up stop leak and the heads were getting zero water. Do not ever use that stop leak stuff.

no, i've never used that stuff but i cant say for the previous owners. only put 5k miles on there myself.

checked the oil in there and it wasn't any color unusual. there were tiny chunks in there but im guessing that might be where its been sitting for about a week without me starting it.

Did you maybe put the thermostat in backwards???

nope, the spring was facing toward the intake. it didn't look like it could fit any other way.
