Default Timing pointer/marker

Ok, I wanted to do my timing today. I cleaned the balancer off and found the timing marks with no problem. My question is where is the the pointer or marker? I was not the only one that could not find it. Is it possible that it has come off? Why is something so simple such a pain in the ***?

Maybe the timing cover has been off and the pointer was never put back on.

Yep, I think I remember the guy telling me that he put a gear drive in the timing chain. Does that sound right? I guess he never put the marker back on. I am going to have to buy one. Thanks for the link and all the help.
