These Diagrams have been around for yrs and seem to answer most of the questions.
The vacuum cannister you're referring to is up inside the passenger side fenderwell. Have you looked there?

yea, a purge cannister, looks like a tiny battery with 2 little domes on top of it on the front passenger side of the car, my car ran like ***** when the line got disconnected
