Default Help with Oil Pan I.D.

Howdy,

I recently bought a 68 Mustang which came with a mostly stock '91 302 (with edelbrock 4bbl carb, intake, and headers). I am hoping that you folks can help me make sure that this is the stock oil pan for this engine (which holds 5qts, right?). It came with a dipstick that is difficult to get back into its tube and does not really have a reading with just over 5qts in the pan. I have a new dipstick coming. The day after I changed the oil my car started making a noise that is either valve tap or piston slap... so obviously I want to be certain I have the correct amount of oil in it.

Is this the correct pan for a '91 302?

Here are pictures:

Well for starters, the deep sump is in the rear of stock mustangs. However, i don't know if it could have been turned around or not. Should take 5 qts to get to the full mark.

if it's a 68 mustang they would not of been able to use the rear sump set up and oil pan that a late model mustang uses. early model stangs use a front sump set up which it looks like you have you can convert a late model block to a front sump by just changing the pick up and pan and the early model pans are 5 qts too. The dip stick should be in the timing cover if they have it shoved in the side of the block still this won't work with a front sump pan ....you will need to remove the timing cover if that is the case and replace with a early model timing cover thAT allows you to take a oil reading from the front sump!!! I have a extra early model timing cover if you need one if interested

Thanks a lot for the replies. The dipstick is indeed located in the side of the block (see the arrow in the attached pic). It goes in between the headers (and is tied to one pipe with wire!). Is that literally all it takes to convert to front reading? Just a new timing cover? If this is what I need I am indeed interested in your extra, how much can I take it off your hands for? Will this front reading work with the fan and serp belt there?

Thanks so much for the help... much appreciated!

p.s. I know the engine is a bit of a mess... I'm working on it! =)

That's all you'll need to do and cap off where the dip stick is now .... I just hacksaw half the tube off and weld it shut and shove it back in thehole as far as interfeering with any thing you may have to reconfigure a few things but there is no way around it as that's why you can't get a reading now the dip stick location is in the totally wrong place. you can send me a private message (PM ME) and we'll talk I'm sure I still have a early model timing cover with the dip stick in it... it's at work I have a 66 coupe but all you should have to do is change timing covers new one/ reproduction ones cost 129.95 from mustangs unlimited if you want this one you can have it for 45.00 I've seen them go on ebay for 70-80 dollars or if you can get one at a salvage yard maybe less??

P.s is that an electrical fuel pump right beside the headers???? if so I'd either do away with that!!! or move it back to the back of the car at a safer location...... also elec fuel pumps push fuel better than pullin' it. also with the early model timing cover since were on the subject of fuel pumps when you have the timing cover off make sure there is a fuel pump excentric on the front of the cam gear and you can eliminate this whole pump issue by installing a mechanical pump where it bolts to the early model timing cover or just buy a fuel pump block off plate if you don't like that idea.

Additionally, the previous owner installed a set of three Equus (yay Walmart.....) gauges. The temp and voltage readings seem to be working perfectly. However, the oil pressure gauge usually reads zero... but sometimes around 30psi. The variation seems completely random... it doesnt increase with throttle or anything. It seems like the engine is getting oil. If you look in the picture of my engine that I posted above, you can see the small clear tubing that leads from the block, just above the deep sump to the gauge inside the cab (the arrow I added points at this as well). As you can see it is not full of oil, but rather there are alternating patches of oil and air all across the length of the tubing. Is this how this is supposed to look? The car is not running in the pic, but it looks the same when it is... however the oil in the tube does move a little bit. Do I need to bleed the air out of this line? I am unfamiliar with these types of mechanical gauges.

Also, if I do need a new oil pump, would you image I use the stock 91 pump given that my pan is flipped around (making use of whatever rerouted pickups are already in there.

Thanks so much for the help!
