Sluggish 94 Gt
I drove mustang's before I got married 13 years ago, so I am really out of the loop. My 94 has good acceleration right after it almost falls on it's face. I haven't even spun the tires yet, I'd have to rev to about 3K and pop the clutch, and I'm not wanting totear it up. I'm thinking of starting with the fuel filter, but where to look. Is this one that is under the car or by the engine. Also, where is this air thing that someone talked about taking out to increase HP. I have put in new plugs and a K&N, not much money spent, but hey, I've got two girls to raise. If I advance the timing, where should I stop at. Would running a fuel injector cleaner thru help, or is it a waste of money. How about spraying out the throttle body. I had trouble keeping it running tonight, then after a few miles it did not die anymore. O.K., I'll admit it, I'm looking for free advice. I can detail a car and make it look like new again, but ask me how and why it moves when you push on the pedal, and I'm at a loss for words. We all have different gifts, sharing yours would be appreciated. <edited><editID>Needforspeed</editID><editDate>37873.0469791667</editDate></edited>

Where is the mass air sensor located, what does it look like. Also, I was told that to check and or change the timing, I would have to disconnect the computer. Evidentally it regulates the timing, so I would not receive a true reading. True or False.</P>
thanks</P>

The mass air sensor is located between your throttle body and air filter. To set timing you need to put a mark on your harmonic balancer where you want the timing to be, like *14 for example is pretty common on a 5.0, unplug the spout connector, put a timing light on the balancer and twist your distributer (after you losen the hold down bolt) until you get the desired timing. Then tightn your distributer back down and plug your spout connector back up. Be sure to listen for pinging and use higher octane fuel to prevent it. Here is a pic floating around that shows both your mass air meter and the spout connector (has zip tie on it). Look on your passenger side fenderwall.</P>

By the harmonic balancer I assume that you are talking about the pulley down where the fan belt goes on. I've done some timing on things in the past, but it has been awhile. Don't you put a mark on the pulley where it is grooved, then put the timing light between the number one spark plug and the wire, and the timing light wire goes to ground. Also, you think that I should go to 12 or 14, what is the factory setting? Will I loose alot of gas mileage? Will it gain acceleration speed off the line? Thanks for the picture, that will be a big help. Also, will the timing change hurt the engine any in the long run. This motor has 123,000 miles on it but runs pretty smooth, except for the occassional dieing. What exactly am I cleaning on the mass air sensor, is it the connections or the tube between the filter and the throttle body?</P>
thanks for your help</P>

umm yea on the timing, increased timing will give better performance and sometimes gas mileage too, you won't hurt your engine unless you have detonation. As a general guess, 89 octane for 12* and premium gas for 14* to be safe. Some ppl can run 14* with 89 and others cant. On the MAS your cleaning the sensor inside the tube and the screen if it has one. They can get k&n oil on them if u use a k&n and it can also get carboned up.

I'm thinkin ditch the car seats and leave your hunnine at home and watch it pull like crazy*LOL*..ok start with the fuel filter( by the gas tank) ,pcv valve (back of engine)..something tells me you never have changed it..then clean the throttle body.best thing is to pull it off and clean all passage ways..
have you replace the plug wires? here again I'm think you haven't a nice set of msd, accell will work great with a new dist. cap and rotor (brass terminals only)...like others have noted set timing at 12 degrees should be good...
fuel injectors clean be cleaned some what using a can of BG PRODUCTS fuel injection cleaner ($20.00 a can)
hope this helps
