Default bad temp gauge or something else?

well lately my temp guage has made me scratch my head. sometimes when its really hot it only goes about a quarter of the way up. and it stays there. then other times even when im not getting on it it goes all the way to three quarters of the way up then stays there for a while...then it'll eventually go back to the middle. and another thing...if i watch it...i can see it swaying back and forth. it dosent like to stay in one place for very long. so please tell me a sensor is bad or something.

the stock analog factory gauges are useless they say c and h ...c for cold and h for hosed!!!!!/screwed the first thing you need to do is verify gauge operation by installing a mechanical gauge= much more accurate and if the same thing happens then you have a cooling system problem.

by mechanical guage you jsut mean like an aftermarket autometer one right?
and would it be hard to hook one of those up?

Check to see if the coolant is full. If it is, you may need a new t-stat or have a problem w/ the radiator fan

mechanical gauges are easy to hook up cause all they have is a sensing probe like an autometer one.

well i know the coolant is full becuase i checked that.
but i heard about someone having a bad sensor that tells the fan when to turn on.
could this be why the temp goes to a certain point then drops down?

ever figure this out? i just bought a 94 gt for the track and have the same problem. been told to get an autometer gauge from summit racing to see if it really is running hot. also, if you look back at the tsb's, there was one for "erratic temp gauge" on this year/engine, fwiw.
