RE: How reliable are fox body Stangs?
Well, I guess we have you all beat... My dad's '84 GT had 653,000 on it when he sold it. He bought it used in '85 with 37,000 on it, and then drove the living crap out of it. He was driving 250 miles a day, 6 days a week to work for several years. Car had many trips to the west coast and back, had been to Canada and back a few times also. We drove it to Indianapolis and back twice a year, and to Rockford, Illinois and back once a year.
At about 250,000, he repainted the car for the first time (all red), put an '88 GT nose, rear bumper, tail lights, and ground effects on it. Also installed tweed '89 GT front and rear seats, door panels, and the rear plastic pieces with the speakers on either side of the rear seat. Kept the original '84 dash and console.
At 468,000, we bought a wrecked '93 GT with 30,000 miles on it. We put the rearend, in the '84, and removed the entire K member with engine, transmission and full front suspension, stuffed it under the '84, and converted it to fuel injection at that time. The car was repainted for the second time in the late 90's at 502,000 miles (red with a dark blue stripe that went down the fenders resembling the old Boss 302's). My dad sold the car in 2002 for $5,500. Being an '84, the odometer only went to 99,999 and then rolled back to 00000. So at the time of the sale, it was showing 53,000 miles. The guy asked if that was the original mileage (the car was cosmetically in excellent condition)... my dad, trying not to laugh, said "Man, that things been around and around like a jackpot." I think the guy thought he was joking... the mileage was not mentioned again during the sell.
The guy who bought it, total wrecked it about a year later in 2003. Hit the median on the interstate and rolled it 4 times. The car was parted out and crushed.

RE: How reliable are fox body Stangs?
they're one of the best cars around! My '89 has 134 k and never have given me trouble in the 11 years I've had it! In fact , these cars hold up so well that I bought the same car twice..... well , not the same car, but another '89 lx exactly the same factory build as my first, but now is cammed with a 4 speed and over 140k and it screams with no smoke! The best part is that people are practically giving them away so buy all you can, I'd own at least 10 or 15
