Default might have a problem with the diff

i took my 88 stang to a mr.lube so i can get some tranny fluid for the T%. they guy opened it up to drain it and he said it was almost empty, i just started driving it so its not a big problem, when i drove out of the place i could tell the shifts were better and smoother.

the problem is the rear diff. the diff whines at the back so i thought that it might be empty to, the guy put very little fluid in it and started dripping out. he then showed me the fill cap , and there was metal shavings on it, does this mean my gears arnt set right, and there shaving off, or is it just normal wear that should be cleaned out? cars got 205 000 km on it but i dont know when the gears were put in.

how much metal was on the plug? there is always a little bit.
if it was normal, the fluid is good & full, i'd say u need a rebuild.

hmm. well when i went to change the engine oil it was literally black, (changed no problems there). if the same applies to the rear end that could cause it so wear out then right?

Where is it leaking out from?, it sounds like to me like your pinion seal or cover gasket could have went south.

my diff hums but the gears are good and t-loc works fine. i have a pinion seal leak and i think it causes some kind of noise.

my fluid looked like crap. when i changed fluid the noise didnt go away but i felt better knowing there was fresh oil in there. i found some metal shavings too but just on the plug, like matt said its fine.

could have a carrier or pinion bearing going out....that'll put metal in the fluid too....one of my carrier bearings took a dump about a year ago and it was growling/whinning a little

i doubt its a bearing. when i drive i can clearly hear gears spinning, it whines, but i was talking to my dad and he said when he had a 5.0 it did the same crap so.

you sure that its the rear end?
if the car is a 5spd, the trans might be whining.
