because they were pedestal mount rockers that were self aligning and locked in place by the trunion and pedestal stand

ok i beleive you and i'm not gonna finish everything up until i get the right guideplates but one thing i can't understand is how in th world guideplates help the rocker stay on the valve stem.

Since your rockers are mounted on studs they spin in circles the guide plate lock the push rod from moving side to side and in turn since the push rod can't move side to side the back of the rocker is held in place ... put the guide plates in place and try tomove the tip of the rocker side to side....now remove the guide plate and try the same thing and see what happens.
