leaking oil

Default leaking oil

Hi guys recently my 89 mustang has been leaking a good amount of oil.I looked under the car and all the oil is dripping off of the tranny pan.Its not tranny fluid its oil so I know that.My question is what is the first thing I should do to like try and fix this?Does anyone have an idea of where its coming from?Someone mentioned to me the rear main seal.I dont kow alot about cars so any help would be appreciated.thanks.

Yeah, most likely the rear main. Tranny will have to come out to replace it.

ya Thats what other people were saying.I have a friend that owns a tranny shop so that will work out great.Also if its not the rear main any other places you think?I am having my graduation party in 2 weeks so Im going to be coming into some money.I want to something maybe performance wise.any ideas?

Pan gasket is probably shot too.. Neither is expensive or hard, just time consuming.

mine was leaking so when i did my clutch i did my rear main seal, in the same project i did the tranny seal, doesnt leak n e more, i would try to find out if it is the main or pan. have fun

Had the low oil sensor leaking (new gasket from 5.0 Resto) and both (seriously) drain plugs (new ones from NAPA). Much better. Still need to look further at valve cover gaskets and pan gasket.

As said earlier, more time that difficulty.

they key to a good seal, is a clean, dry ,tacky surface, rubber gaskets instead of cork[:'(] and even torquing. Felpro makes one hell of a good 1 piece blue oil pan gasket.[8D]

When applying the rear main, a dab of high temp bearing grease around the seal will help extend the life and make instal a breeze. Its very easy to put these in crooked or damage them, I use a rubber mallet and block of polished wood.

Check the rear intake gasket. That son of a bitch always starts leaking and you really can't tell where the leak is coming from until you stick your hand on the rear of the lower intake manifold and feel a puddle of oil.
