if your getting rid of your airbag alltogether you could get a tilt steering column and steering wheel from an 89 or earlier fox mustang. you dont have to pull your dash. just some of the trim under the column.

If this for the street youll have to let your ins. company know there is no airbag. Youre rates will likely go up since you removed a safety feature. Also, some inspections will wonder why you have no airbag and may fail you.

Im pretty sure youll need the entire steering column for tilt. Theres a few dash pieces to remove at the column to get to the bolts for the cloumn (should be 2 bolts on each side) and such but to actually remove the column etc i couldnt tell ya. I never had to go that far.

Ive put airbags in before and the dash didnt have to come out to do any of that so id say the same for taking the airbag stuff out. However there is a seperate computer for the bag behind the dash, im not sure if thats easily accessible once the heater controls are out tho. I believe its tied into the main computer (in the kick panel) to so if you remove the airbag stuff youll have an airbag code and the airbag light will come on (which you could ignore or pull the bulb). Disconnect the battery before removing the airbag stuff so the system will drain or the bag could deploy on you. Its possible.

So why a tilt-wheel?

well i used to have an 89 with tilt and a grant wheel and i just felt more comfortable driving with the lowered and smaller wheel plus it looks really cool . so on my 93 i was planning on removing the wheel and installing a grant one anyway so i figured while i was down there might as well go with the tilt

Seein as youll need something from 87-89, new isnt always possible unless you go aftermarket. Besides, you can always paint the column to look new if you have to.

Im curious, is a 4 banger column any different than a 5.0? Seems to be a reasonable question.
