Default RE: steering wheel

Well I jacked up the car today and did the 9 and 3 thing and there is play on both sides. Is it the tie rods doing this? And does anyone have any sites that explain how to swap them out for new ones? Thanks for your guys help

look to see where the play actually is. if the only thing that is moving is the rotor/wheel it might be time for bearings

I odubt the bearings would cause that aslong as they are properly installed. To replace the tie rods you have to remove the boots on the rack and then take out a set pin (may not have one). Then you just unscrew the ends. be sure to count the number of turns you make and measure the witdh on the front tires. Centerline-to-centerline works. You may have to mark it if you dont have a good centerline.

If your steering rack is leaking, now would be a good time to install a new rack and pinion. You can get a reman. from auto zone for around $80, and they come with the inner tie rods. Assuming your inner's are bad, i bet if it is tie rods it will be your inner tie rods.

Well I can't actually see where it is moving, all I know is when I hold it at 9 and 3 and pull on one side and push on the other there is play in there. You say I should change my rack and pinion but that looks pretty difficult[>:]

No i am not saying just replace it. You have to determine where the problem is, all we can do is speculate and give you ideas. If the wheel is moving you should be able to find where it is coming from, there are not a whole lot of moving parts that it could be.

Just put a new rack and outer tie rods, I paid $250 for the latemodel resto kit. Comes with rack, inner and outer tie rods, rack polyurethane bushings, strut and sway bar links. It works great

Assuming the front end is tight I'd get the tires balanced and an alignment. Usually if the tow is off it'll still center itself, but the wheel might be crooked. If the wheel bearings are shot your tire will have top to bottom movement. If it has side to side movement it'll be the tie rod(s). Sometimes when the ball joint is loose it will cause some side to side slack as well so look/feel what is loose when you're moving the tire. If you're unsure what you're lookin at have a shop take a look.
