Default 89 LX 5.0; Is $175 labor only good for gear swap?

I am swapping out my stock 2.73 for a FMS 3.73 and a local speedshop wants $175 for labor only and I provide all parts/fluid. Or... $500 for everything (FMS or Motive gears) which he lists as gears, installation kit and Royal Purple fluid. With 145K miles, should have more done while he is in there? I know full rebuild is always an option, but everthing works fine as I just was some more performance without engine work right now. I really don't want to dump $800+ into the rearend. I am trying to keep the car as close to stock(visually) as possible.

Thanks in advance

I have never paid anyone to install gears. But there have been times that i would have paid $175 to let someone do it. I dont know where $800 comes from unless your talking the locker or something. The $175 should include axlebearings also, he is right there. If your locker and all that stuff is working properly i would not worry about replaceing that. If labor for inner and outer axle bearings are not included for that price, i would not worry about it, they dont usually go bad. Just be sure to check the races.

I paid exactly $175 to get my gears installed. Got the install kit for free and the gears were an additional $175. $500 is not too bad of a deal for gears, the install kit, the labor, and royal purple fluid. I've seen people get quoted $500 for just gears and labor, no isntall kit or fluids.

That's not a bad deal, but you might check around at a couple other shops just to be sure.

We charge 350 for a gear install at our shop and we are the cheapest in our area. 175 sounds cheap, are you sure the person really know what they are doing and not just going to throw it together?

I paid $250 to get the gears put in and the trac loc rebuilt and that was with me buying all the parts.
