Best year T5 to snag?

Best year T5 to snag?
ok, my dad is looking for a T5 to swap into his II that currently has a 2.3 4 banger and a 4 speed manual. he's been finding alot of different info about which years had which ratios, and then something about different speedometer gearing on the tailshaft.
is there any particular range of years you guys recommend in terms of best gearing, best compatibility, etc? i dont think the final gear ratio is as much of a concern as getting a better (lower) first gear to help the 2300 take off like it should.

WHY are you messing with a II? youd be better off storing it somewhere

I'd look for a T5Z, have the 2.95 first gear and are supposed to be rated a bit higher than the average T5. I forget which years they came in, or even if they came in factory Mustangs.. I found one for cheap when I did my AOD-T5 swap.

yeah i believe he said something about 89 or 90, but there was a change in the speedo gear and the earlier one was the same teeth count as pretty much all the older stuff for years and years....... looks liek its probably the 89 then. keep in mind power handling isnt an issue with the 2300. i'll be building it soon, and it has some head work, bigger valves and a better cam - but the intention is just to add a little pep and better driveability, its not supposed to be anything badass.
and jake, come around me and talk that kinda crap - i'll snap your fuking neck.

FYI the II's are going up in value as they are becoming harder and harder to find. not to mention this car is a Mach1 with the "delete package" which means it only came with the 2.3 - you know how many of those they made? not many. you know how many of those didnt end up with V8 swaps or in the crusher because the junk yards dont put any value on II's? probably less than you can count on one hand.
so yeah, i think it'll be a cool car to keep around
