RE: 3 angle valve job help.
if they are already ported wouldnt they have gotten a valve job as part of it? if the valves havent been ground and seats havent been cut since last time the motor was ran i would highly suggest getting a valve job. in a pinch you can get some fine lapping compound and just lap them yourself but you wanna make sure those puppies are sealing before you assemble

I didn't think a valve job would cause you too pick up extra hp, they just make sure the valve seals. At least that has always been my understanding.

if you want to chance low cyl compression, a engine that runs like hell, and having to pull the engine back apart after you get it all together, then dont get a valve job...
my local machine shop charges 100 for a full valve job (including new seals, shims and retainers) and 140 for all of the before mentioned andif the heads need resurfacing(yes heads, as in both) its well worth it and there is no way I would ever assemble a engine without it.

The valve job has a lot to do with flow. You can pick up a bunch of flow from a good valve job. A friend of mine works in a head porting shop and he was porting a set of Trick Flows for a 347 that was going to have a big solid roller cam. He told me that there wasn'ta big gainin flowbelow .500 lift with porting. His biggest gains in flow below .500 lift were got with a performance valve job.
