bumping up the timing

bumping up the timing
I wanted to make sure if I could bump up the timing on a 92 5.0. I have a timing light and Ive done it on my 65 stang. On the 5.0s all I would do is just hook up the timing light and see what its at first and then turn the distributor in small incraments and test it out so it wont start pinging. Should this even be done on a 5.0 since it is computer controlled? If so usually how much? He also runs on super unleaded as well.

RE: bumping up the timing
On the newer 5.0s you can adjust the base timing like you said above. You just have to make sure you unplug the SPOUT connecter by the air box (on sn-95s I'm not sure where it is on Fox's)to keep the computer from messing with the timing while you are adjusting it. The stock timing is usually set to 10*, and most people seem to have success with using ~14*, but that will vary from each engine. That also means you have to run premium fuel.

dont go any higher than 15°
even though you MIGHT not be pinging.... you arent making any more power

Mine is at 14* and people keep telling me to bump it up to 16-18*.
