Default starter grinding

i have a 93 mustang that i just bought a new starter for. i intstalled the starter, and tried to start the car. all the starter did was grind its teeth on the flywheel. i took the starter out, and looked at the teeth on it and they looked worn. i really dont understand what could be the problem considering the starter bolts right up to the bellhousing, and there shouldnt be misalignment on the starter and the flywheel. i am really lost here, does anyone have any ideas on what this could be?

yea, i really dont think i have the wrong starter. i could have the wrong starter, but could there be anything else wrong? my car was originally an automatic, and i swapped it to a 5 speed. i replaced everything. there is a plate that is between the bellhousing and the and the block. this plate is also sandwiched between the the bellhousing and the starter. is there a plate like this on a factory 5 liter with a t-5? would this plate affect anything?

Sounds like you have the wrong starter and that plate is suppose to be there.
