is it worth degreeing the stock cam?
well, im putting the motor together soon... everything is going to have to be stock for now... do yall think its worth degreeing the stock cam? so that it makes its power untill 6k? im not concerned w. bottom end much, seeing that i launch at 2/2500 anyway... im more concerned with making my power from ~3000-~6000, where i spray... thoughts?

My stock engine made it's best power at 4900 rpms and best torque at 3900 rpms. If you advance the cam you will raise your torque curve so you will launch worse probably....not sure how much it would help you. I would keep it where you have it, or retard it to help out your launching is anything.

If you are shifting at 6000rpm. You are shifting way too late for a stock cam OR you need another cam.
Degreeing ANY cam is worth it. Would I rip apart a perfectly good car just to degree it? No.
If it's all apart and the option is there, Yes.
It's advance for torque and retard it for horsepower.
Most stock combinations will like to be retarded.

no im not already shifting at 6k... im shifting around 5-5500, however, to make the most out of what im doing, id like to make power untill about 6k...
and yes thats what im thinking... retard it slightly, to try to grab a little more top end...
i mean when im racing the motor is never below 2500 anyway... seeing that thats where i launch, and shifting it doesnt drop that low.
i know what degreeing a cam is, how to do it, and its pro's and con's... what i dont know, and am asking, is if its worth the effort on a stock motor?
yes the whole thing is apart.

Dimebag your power with nitrous is probably done at 4500-4800. You should try shifting around there and you might pick up a couple tenths. With stock heads your not gonna make power to 6k rpm.

Dime, I'll tell you 2 times I was sold on cam timing.
Had a 70 Road Runner. Stock 440 eng with a Holley carb and headers. Degreed in a 0.484" Mopar cam. Ran a 13.0@106.
Wanted more so I swapped in the next bigger cam, just lined up the dots. It was a 0.509". Ran a dissapointingly slow 12.9@105.
After degreeing it I ran a 12.4@109.
12.9 and 12.4, same cam.
Next time was with my high mileage, severely neglected and rusted 88 LX hatch. It suprised me with a 13.9 @ 99 in pure stock trim.
This was a driver and eventually needed a waterpump and timing chain cover. The chain was so slack it was rubbing on the cover.
Replaced the chain/gears. It was now tight as new but also not as retarded as the worn one. Torque was now up but power above 4000 was down. Tq was now just spinning the tires and it also was missing top end and the numbers said the same storey. My ****box would only go a 14.3 @96 now.

lol thanks for the input... im going to give my teacher all my cam info, and all the motor specs, tell him where its at, where i want it... hell have a good good feel as to how much i want to retard it... so we just might go ahead and do it...
i guess im gonna need a new adjustable cam gear???? or what
