Need advice: 302 or 351W
I am in the process of trying to decide on an engine for an out-of-commission 95 GT. I could rebuild the stock 302, drop a new 302 in, or drop a 351W in. The intention is to have a track racing vehicle with 400-500 hp and good torque, but still be able to be "driven there". It will not be a daily driver. I plan to use F/I but not NOS. I could sure use some good advice.

I think he meant forced induction as getting 500hp from a 351 without it would be an expensive beyotch.
Go for the 351. It's easier to make similar power levels with more displacement. If you're building it from the ground up you might want to build a stroker. With more displacement you can run less boost and get the same power = more reliable + cheaper.

It seems that the 351W is a popular choice. I have seen many offers online for stroked engines, but I understand that they can have reliability problems; is this true? I do mean to use Forced Induction (F/I), but I would also like to set it up as EFI (electronic fuel injected) just because I think it would be challenging and fun to do so. There is a good machine shop here in Jax that says they can do this, but they have not quoted a price. Supposedly they can get the engine block cheap ($1000 refurbed) and we can go from there. Would I really need to stroke it to get 500hp? Is there a rough estimate as to how much boost I would have to run to get to 500hp?

You dont have to use any boost to get 500hp out of a 351w, stroked or unstroked. A good semi-radical cam, good set of heads, intake, carb, exhaust could easily get you 450hp alone. You could go more wild and get 500, but 450 is pretty darn good, if you stroke 500 would be a definate easy accomplishment. Don't spend 1k on a remanufactured s**t block, spend 150 bucks on a boneyard complete motor so you have all your accessories, spend 200 bucks to get the machine work done, then get some good internals and heads for it. Thats my 3 cents.

351 , once your done with a good built 347 ,331 your not that off from a 351

the cost is not that muchmore . they handle more power on the ave ,depending on the year of the block. also a cowl hood is prob in order too. and you will have to tune it . i dont think i have ever see anyone try to use the stock calib in any way . there are small issuse to take care of but well worth a 351w swap.
