This is embarrissing but.... I parked my car for the winter (1993 Gt) about 3 weeks ago but it's been so nice out lately I decided to take it for a drive. I went to put the battery back in it and I being as smart as I am put the battery cables on backwards there was a nice big flash and then the battery started to smoke from the top and bottom. I then just to make sure the battery was toast hooked the cables up the right way and the car started up fine but of course the battery light in the dash was on and the battery was slowly dieing so I decided to go take the battery out of my wifes car wich is new and put in my car but after starting the car with the new battery in itthe battery light was still on and the car was slowly begining to die again. Could I have some how damaged my alternator and if thats not it what could it be? Sorry if I ask some rather simple questions I am a beginer at the car game but am learning alot as I go and having fun as well! Thanks guys....

First thing I would check are the fusable links that run from the starter solenoid to the power feed on the back of the alternator.

you just popped a fusable link under the battery tray.

the fusible links are at the starter solenoid. NOT under the battery tray.i agree with pro50. check those first. just grab em one by one and try and pull em apart, if they come apart you've found the bad ones. have ur alternator tested as well, it coulda fried the regulator

Well thats where mine was...I did that same stupid thing, installed my battery backwards and couldn't find any popped fusable links. started taking stuff out of the engine compartment, and there was a melted wire under my battery tray. Maybe yours is different 1fstlx?

as far as i know maiello all 86-93 mustangs have the fusible links at solenoid only. are u sure it was a fusible link? maybe it was a alternator wire since it runs thru the headlight harness on that side? didnt mean to sound like a d**k or nothin

yeah i think it was the alternator wire. lol i thought you were trying to be a dick. no other wires got damaged other than that one...I was flipping out though because I had just bought the car.
