Heres an easier way to help you out, look at your firing order. If it has the HO firing order you will be using a 50 oz balancer. If it is not then it is an older short block and I would guess that the balancer also has a bunch of holes drilled partially thru it to take out weight thus giving it a 28 oz balance. I ran into the same question with my motor I just got running. I wasn't sure which firing order to go or what balance of a flywheel to get because the motor was pieced together using 79-84 parts and the guy I got the motor from couldnt remember.

From what I am reading there are only those 2 balances. The H.O.'s with a 50 oz flywheel balance use a 32 oz damp. I thought they were both 50 oz's. so again does your balancer have the holes drilled out of the thick part of it or not? Mine did so I used a 28 oz fly and I didnt have any vibrations from that guess. If it does have the drilled spots I would go with a 28 if not go with the 32. thats what i would do. Hell if one gives you alot of vibration take it off and take it back and swap for the other at the part store and just say it was the wrong one.

As for the holes being drilled. the 50 oz has holes in it also. so i cant really use that technique.

i woulda thought anything that old was still a 2 piece rear main, flat tappet, 28 oz motor[&:]

if you have a part number and your shooting for a used one, just match the damn part numbers [8D]

I am also running into the issue I have a ford 302 with e1te on the harmonic balancer???

so I thought about and if any one has say two of either a 28oz imbalance harmonic balancer or 50oz imbalanced harmonic balancer, maybe even both and this is only for doing a swap from factory to aftermarket or just a standard replacement. weigh two of either said balancer and see how close they weigh or if they weigh the same, then do the same with the other category, then compare both category's of factory 28oz and 50oz harmonic balancer's because I know imbalance might not be suggesting their is a 23oz weight difference but their might be a weight difference im not sure I don't have all 4 in my possession that are stock ?? im saying all stock because beyond that in the world of aftermarket their could be significant weight difference.
