Default Another 5 lug conversion

I am gathering the parts to do a 5 lug conversion on my 83 GT. I have 94 front spindles and brakes bought and am debating on what to do about a 94 rearend I have. The question I have is can I run the whole 94 rearend the way it is or is it too wide. I did read the tech article posted. It talked about putting the 94+ axles in a fox body rearend, and I think it said the track width would be only .25 inches wider on each side doing this axle swap or did it mean that was the width of the whole rearend swap??? I can handle the wider track width if its only .25 in per side. I'll just roll the fender lips.I would just measure the widths of the different rearends but I currently don't have my car or the rearend available untill after x-mas. I'm stationed in 29 Palms right now and don't have my dad's tools or garage either.

The SN95 (94-04) rear ends are actually .75" wider on each side, whether it's an 8.8 or 7.5. Now you can bolt an SN95 rear right in your and then compensate for the wider rear by dialing in different backspacing on the rear wheels.

You'll also have to get a different master cylinder for the bigger brakes and rear discs. 79-86 master cylinder uses SAE threads and dinky cylinders. A master cylinder out of an 85 Town Car should bolt right in and has a 1" cylinder but still has to be converted from a two port to a three port design. There's a link around here in a different thread and I'm ondifferent comp that doesn't have it in my favorites, that covers the entire swap.

94-95 spindles can't have the PBR dual piston brakes put on without modification, or grinding. They keep the right track width and have less steering angle than the 96+. The 96+ Have an 8mm wider track width and more steering angle, plus can have the lighter, dual piston aluminum calipers. When I get home later today I'll post that link that explains everything.

I'm also performing the same modification to my '83. So far I have collected '98 Cobra rotors, calipers and spinals which only have 500 miles on them($380). An NOS 1993 Cobra master cylinder($75) and 1994+ rear brakes(complete) with the 5-lug axles($250). I will later be upgrading the rear brakes to cobra rears through a kit that is offered by Ford Racing. I still have to buy a proportioning valve and probably a few other odds and ends. Unfortunatly I will not be able do the install for a few months as I'm a young accountant and my firm will have me working 60 hours a week during tax season. As for the increased width from the rear axles, I think I will be fine. I will be running Mach 1 whels which are only 8" wide and 245 tires. I've talked to a guy who runs SN-95 axles and Mach 1 wheels with no problems. Later on I'm going to be putting 10 annv. Cobras on the car which are 9" wide. That may be a problem but I will cross that road when I get there. Here is the link 86HOGT was probably talking about. http://sn95brakes.com/

Good luck,

Brian
