stock cam/head questions??
Car is a 93 GT, 70,000 mi.,full exhaust w/high flow cats, ud pullies, cai, 3:73. I'm looking to make a good weekend cruiser with streetable low to mid- range torque. Over the winter I had planned on doing an h/c/i upgrade, but now having second thoughts on the cam,let me explain. I already have the intake (Typhoon), 70mm maf, 65mm tb and a set of ported e7s w/stock size valves. I originally was looking for a mild cam to go with this combo (e-cam, steeda 18), since this is not a drag car, just a weekend street car on a budget. Now I'm thinking, would it be better to stay with the stock cam and justupgrade to 1.7 rr? The reason I ask is because, I am trying to make good low to mid-range power, car will never see above 5k rpm, . I guess I'm thinking , is upgradingto a mildcam and the work/money that goes with it really going to gain me that much more seat-of-the pants power? I know even professionally ported e7s can only flow so muchand alot of people will say to get better heads, but I want to try to make the most of this set-up and I don't want to put a cam in justto say it has one. With the 1.7rr lift will be about the same as steeda 18, but the duration is quite different (stock 276-266, steeda 220-226). Anyopinions?

RE: stock cam/head questions??
Instead of doing 1.7 rockers I'd find a cam that works in the range you're looking for. Cams make their power more from their duration rather than lift, adding 1.7 rockers will add some power but I don't think it justifys the price.
and just FYI those duration specs you listed are not comparible specs.

RE: stock cam/head questions??
ok... you want to keep the ported e7s... so ill shut up about them... now the cam...
personally id go stock cam w. 1.7RRs... but id also convert to stud mount and guideplates...however i couldnt justify spending the money to do that to stock heads... so... i guess id get a cam to grow into
the important question... why the hell are you only turning it to 5k?.... i think w. my spare block im gonna build one that revs to about 8k or so

If you build your motor to handle rpms to 8k, that's good, but I don't think winding mineup that highisgoing to do it much good. Considering I have ported e7s and possibly a cam thatwill make usable power onlyto about 5-6k.Thanks for the input though, I think I'm leaning towards the camupgrade.

Nothing wrong with bringing a 5.0 to 6000R's, it's pretty standard. You have worked heads and a good intake so a cam could really wake that engine up, I really don't think you'd be disappointed with even a mild cam. Plus who doesn't like the sound of a cammin' 5.0?

RE: stock cam/head questions??
I'm leaning toward the Steeda #18 cam, not ready to dump money on a custom grind.I am trying to keep this car emissions legal. Will this cam comply? Anyone with any experience with this cam? I don't see alot of used #18s for sale (unlike the e-cam), so I'm hoping this means people were happy with them. That or nobodywants them.
