i got code 54, 31, 85

31 and 85 have been there for months, just EGR bull****.

code 54 is the new code its weird, the book says

"Vane air flow sensor or air charge temperature sensor"

straight from the haynes manual, i didnt know we had air charge temp sensors in the 5.0s. whats this mean?
it's either the MAF sensor OR the air temperature sensor built into the same housing with the MAF (vane air sensor). that what the code 54 is telling you to check out. probably got oil from the air filter on the wires in the MAF and this is making it act up on you.

thanks roundman, how do i clean this? the MAF is such a delicate device.

To clean the MAF just get a can of carb cleaner or brake clean but make sure the can says "no residue" on it. Take your MAF off and spray down the tube on the little wires and allow to dry then re-install.

I cleaned the maf thoroughly with a Qtip and made sure it was sterile. i ran the car to school and the gas mileage got much better, i think back to normal. but i still noticed a drop in power and the engine running a little warmer than usual... dont know whats up with that.

The Air Charge Temperature sensor or ACT is located on the lower manifold on the drivers side towards the front of the motor. If its reading the air temp in the manifold incorectly it will cause rich condition, and driveability problems.

the manifold i got had no fitting for the ACT. so i left it unplugged, its been that way for a month with no change in gas mileage except for just recently. when i looked at the sensor it was really crummy and had lots of buildup, so it probably never worked anyway.

My ACT was installed in the intake tube right before the throttle body as I have the explorer upper and lower without provisions for the ACT. I replaced mine as it looked the same way you described, mine fixed the hanging throttle issue I was having.

ahh, so where exactly did you place the ACT. between the MAF and TB. and did you drill a hole in your CAI and just screw the sensor in there? but wouldnt the air charge temperature differ from where that TB is to where the lower intake manifold is (where the ACT should be)... and yes i have a explorer intake too. any ideas?

Here is a pic of where my ACT is exactly,

As far as does it make a difference in engine performance? They did dyno test with it in both places, some say it is better in the CAI tube as it gets a better gauge of actual air temp instead of air temp from a heat soaked manifold. And yet others maintain that it is better in the intake. To my understanding Ford moved it to the air filter box in 94 so there must be something to the air intake track, rather than the manifold.

Forgot to add, I used a rubber valve cover grommet to insert the ACT into, as the hole came out a little bigger than the ACT itself. This makes it easier to remove if you have the need, its a nice tight fit and screws into place but I don't have to worry about it seizing or anything like that. I did run a bead of clear RTV silicone around it as well because I'm over cautious like that lol.

what does spraying carb cleaner all over the engine do? hwo does just spraying that stuff allow you to find leaks?

I sprayed carb cleaner all over the engine bay and on the vacuum lines, idle didnt change. so i dont know why the car is running so rich, only thing i can think of are the O2 sensors malfunctioning, maybe the wiring under there came loose. i dont know what else it could be really.

if some of the carb cleaner gets sucked into a vacuum leak it will change the idle as the cleaner gets burned up...

The wires were cut and extended from the harness over to the intake tube, I redid the connection as they were just crimped when I got the car. I solder all connections on a car for piece of mind, I was told you can pull some slack out of the harness but I wouldn't recommend that at all. On a side note I just heard from my landlord, he's putting the house up for sale and I have till august to find somewhere else to live. Looks like I may put the stang up for sale here soon, new baby, new house, new bills ooooh chit.

LMFAO, sure I'll give it to you free as long as you take the rest of the car for $4200

BTW the CAI is off Ebay, I paid $30 for it. Worked out well, a little short on the tubes though, but the rubber seals/joints are long enough to get a good bite on the tube still.
