What year is my engine?

How can I go about checking the year of my engine? I have a 87 GT, and the guy I bought it from says theres an 88 motor in it. How did I know for sure?

87 and 88 roller blocks are the same.. and will carry a e7 casting number..so it'll be kind of tough to verify that one
