Even with a synchronizer on reverse you would not be able to "accendentally" engage it while slamming up through the gears.

The synchronizer is only made to match the gear speed. Any minor difference it can handle. High rpm suddenly engaged a synchronizer will NOT be able to handle.

Solutions for grinding into reverse. As said many time. Hit any forward gear before engaging reverse.

OR

Wait a few seconds with the clutch pedal down. The input shaft/disc will stop spinning after about 3 seconds and easily allow you to engage reverse without grinding.

OR

Get a 1993 T5 which does have a synchronizer on reverse.
Some 92's have them also.

reverse has NO synchro, just feel the shift and pull it in slow. if you go fastit will grind every time.

i dont mean to hijack here. i always go 5 then reverse to back up. what if you driving and your in 5th gear and you decide to drop into fourth is there still a chance that the tranny might grab reverse if you accidently miss 4th and hit Reverse

no, reverse is a sliding collar spur cut gear. The gear is not designed for such, nor is the entire shifting operation due to that style of shif.
