advancing the timing allows spark delivery to occur sooner so that the cumbustion process can take place sooner and be done at the proper time..if the cumbustion process is done at the optimal time no fuel is wasted and optimal power can be produced..this is a quick way to explain it without all the technical jargin.......to advance the timing..pull your spout connector and mark your balancer or clean the rust off so you can see the marks.... start the car and loosen dizzy bolt and point a timing light down at the balancer and pointer and rotate the dizzy until the pointer lines up with no more than about 14 degrees btdc stock setting is 10 degrees and at 14 you may want to run premium fuel when finished setting timing sighten dizzy bolt back down shut car off and reinstall spout connector and drive away to fun!!

I just did this but I am wondering should i go with a hotter plug. Throttle response is better but how much horsepower and fuel economyisreally gained?

I advanced timing recently to 15*...my engine pings at 16* barely at 5800 rpm in 3rd. I probally will go back to 14 though to be safe. I did notice a considerable difference with the timing advance and a good way to explain it for me would be that it just speeds up acceleration in all gears. If Im rolling at 40 mph in 2nd gear (3200rpms) and punch it...it actually whips me back a little...kinda reminds me how my 2001GT..cause it did that.

MJR46 is dead on the money. Im running right inbetween 15-16* and have to run 93 octane or it pings but i'v checked the plugs and they look great. so you should have no problem running it around there.

just go to sears or any local parts store and buy a timing light if you don't have one and a special 1/2 dizzy wrench = makes life easy and your set to do the timing
