the only lx that smokes the gt might be the automatic cause they have more hp. i haVE HAD 8 MUSTANGS AND TWO NOW. THE ONE I HAVE NOW 86 GT CONVERT. AUTO IS THE FASTEST STOCK I HAVE EVER HAD. BONE STOCK IT DOES 14.2 ON STREET TIRES. NOW IT IS REAL MODIFIED WITH BOLT ONS AND DOES 13.9 I HAD A BLOWER ON IT AND SPUN THE BOTTOM END OF MY OTHER MOTOR OUT 92 GT .THIS ONLY TURNED 12.9 WITH 11LBS BOOST. AND THE BOTTOM END WAS WIPED WHEN I DID THAT TIME. I DEF THINK THAT 86 IS FASTEST CALL FORD. THIS EXCLUDES THE NEW STYLE CRAP. IN THE FOXBODY 79-93 IS WHERE ITS AT.

I've been reading about Mustangs since 1984. I bought my '85 in 1984 because it was going to be the last one with a carb. The 1985 had 210hp and 265lbs-ft. The 1986 had 200hp and 285 lbs-ft. The 1987-1988 LXs were always considered the fastest because of light weight. The GTs were considered bad for any kind of racing because of the lack of structural strength from the hatch back - the notch-backs were structurally stronger for any kind of racing.

GT actually stands for Gran Turismo - I believe its the Italian term for Grand Touring, although altavista translates it as "great tourism".

does anyone here think that low 14s is possible, I for one don't think so, I'm not calling anyone a liar, just want to know if it's possible. That's what the new mustangs do right low 14's? And some one said "My 88 Notchback ran 14 flat in stock form.My vote is for the 87-88 Notchback."

No slicks. I fooled with the timing, ran a colder plug & thermo, and removed the air baffle. I gotto the point where I was running14.00-14.20 consistantly. So I droppedthe little cash I had (i was in college at thetime-1994) on gears and exhaust and broke third gear on the first run !! That was my last pass. Now I'm trying to get back in it.

I don't blame you guy's for being skeptical. Lot's of guys at the track were too. I friend of mine had an 87 noth that wouldgo 13.90-14.00. Of course he had everything riped out on the interior and a home made ram air that went out through where the right headlight should have been. That guy could drive too.

low 14's is right on..there were a host of gears choices when ordering..a notch with no ac,power anything with a 3.55 and drag radials 13.90's was the ticket...

I have a 91 notchback 5.0 auto. I have 3.73 gears, chip, h-pipe,jba shorty headers, and cold air. I ran 15.78. I think it was because i have some hard tires and i didn't shift back to first to keep it in second(aod shuffle). Also everybody was runing really slow maybe it was the track.

87 LXs cant be the fastest.. hope they arent... I think mine needs a tuneup though. Cant say my car is fast but one time this newer stang.. must have been 90-93 convertible (which might make my point moot) raced me from a light and I matched his speed at my will only to dare him to go faster. Could have totally sped by him.. and he was pushing it with all he had. .. still, I dont think 87s are the bestest.... I need a tuneup.

Well I hope this helps...this past sunday 10/19/03, i took my 86 lx 5L auto notchback to Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, PA. Completely stock, my fastest time was 14.81 @93.32 mph. The car seemed to pick up .05 of a second when hot lapping. Also, I left @ 1100rpm and NEVER spun the tire off the line. If desired ill discuss any of this with someone just post here or email me, tyvm for your time.
