Default GT40 Valve Spring Questions

I am rebuilding a set of GT40 iron heads and noticed that the intake and exhaust springs are different heights. I was wondering if anyone new if the motorsport springs are the same way? That way I could still use my factory lock and retainers. Here is a link.

no the springs for the ford racing cams are the same height ....the difference is in the step of the retainer that allows the setting of initial installed height..that's why it's important to not mix up the two different retainers when assembling

So would you just trash the stock retainers and go with a set of after market retainers?? I will be running about 510 lift.

You are rebuilding the heads right? Might as well replace them while you are there.

its not the retainers, or any of that fun stuff, its the valves them selves...running the lift ur running (im at .512) i ran the recomended comp springs, and shimmed them acordingly and eevn tho they have differant heights up top, they are infact both even, because of a few little shims...

this isnt somethng u can really do urself, take it to a machine shop, tell them what ur doing, have them set the springs up(or even order them for you) acordingly, you might not need any shims at all, and the differance doesnt effect spring pressure TOO much

You really need to get springs, retainers and locks well matched to your cam.

I have been considering the TFS kit that is for the factory iron heads and Edelbrock makes a kit too. The kit includes springs, locks, and retainers. From what the machine shop tells me, I need a spring 110lbs seat pressure and 1.75 install height. Both of these kits work for that.
