Default tensioner on backwards?

I don't know how but my tensioner is on backwards. Instead of being able to pull it up and then it springs back down and tensions the belt, its the other way around. If this isn't clear enough than imagine your tensioner. Then, take it off and if it's possible put it on upside down so it tensions the other way around. If this still doesn't clear things up i'll try and get a picture of it. But has anyone heard of this before? I think it might be my problems for my altornater not charging my batter enough. If you know how to fix this please let me know because its bugging the hell out of me tryin to figure out whats going on with this. It was like this when I bought it. Thanks everyone.

Ok, I took this a few min. ago and it's the best I can come up with without having to take off the shroud. Now imagine that it tensions the opposite way.

Is the retaining tab broken on the back of the tensioner? I had that happen on my 1st stang and it did something similar. There is a small tab or nipple if you will sticking out the back of the tensioner to make sure it only goes so far, if it broke it can over extend and possibly cause that condition. Funny thing is the tab is part of the cast aluminum housing and it really doesn't take much to pop it off.
