Default alternator questions

the problem - above 2000 rpm i get a turbo whine from under the hood, i dont have turbo and the noise drives me crazy, its like a vacumm cleaner sound
traced the sound, pretty sure its the alternator, probably bearings...

1) how difficult is it to replace the bearings on the alternator

if i replace the alternator how many amps do i need to run smaller pullies and do i need to do a 3g conv. to avoid idle issues

don'tbother w/ the smaller pullies it's not worth the hassles of charging probs

pull the alt, go to autozone or kragens or whoever does an alt test for free, and see if it whines when they test it

do it in the parking lot so your good to go, if it tests bad just get a new one, they are lifetime warrantied

if it doesn't sqeak...check the smog pump

you don't replace the bearings in the alt...you go down to the local parts store and get a new alt if it's the cause

haha thats exactly what i was thinking. i know how to rebuild an alt whenlike the rectifier bridgegoes bad but if the bearings are shot you just get a new alt and i dont think you can even replace the bearings

Default RE: alternator questions

get an automotive stephascope and narrow down the noise to a pulley or component
