Default Transmission problems...

I have a t-5? manual transmission in my 90 lx 5.0 and it has become incresingly hard to get into gear...sometimes, if i let the clutch out slightly it will slide right in other times it is smooth... and others its smooth at higher rpms. the transmission itself has a "clunk" in it when letting off and stepping on the gas again almost like a bunch of play in it. i thought it was my rear end at first, but when i got under and rotated the driveshaft sure enough the play and clunk is in the transmission when rotating the driveshaft. it still seems to be very strong and learing how to shift it right can make it seem like i have no problem at all yet if you drive it like you should be able to there is a problem. letting off all the way and applying pressure again to the gas petal will bring that play and bang-clunk. also, fifth gear when going 90+ has a throbbing sound. any help would be great let me know if you need anymore information. thanks.

never had a problem but always that clunk and play. thanks!

Default RE: Transmission problems...

probably synchros are shot

typical

either rebuild or get a better tranny, depends on your plans for the car, a stock t5 is actually pretty strong no matter what anyone says

if you pull and reinstall the rebuild should only be $350-$500 total

ehh like bob said synchros but id expect to pay a little bit more, depends where you live i suppose but labor costs and parts on the rebuild will probly cost you a minimum of $600 i think i paid $650 but it came with stronger gears synchros and a 2 year no question asked warranty, but upgrading to stronger trans will be 3 times more expensive and not worth it unless your going to start putting down some good numbers.

ORIGINAL: 9tyfiveo

fifth gear when going 90+ has a throbbing sound.
Might be driveshaft balancing.

sounds to me like you have more than one problem... the going into gear thing is probably the syncros like said, and i know around here its 650 to havea t-5rebuilt... the clunking and throbing at 90+ sounds like you got some bad u-joints in your driveshaft...

wow..$650 is crazy, thats automatic rebuild prices.

seriously...go to the ford dealership...ask one of the mechanics who is good w/ trannies and who works on the side.

probably get away w/ $200 labor and the superalloy rebuild kit is $299, reg kit is about $150 i think

it helps if you know someone at a dealer...since the mechanics might be sketchy about saying they do work at home.

my old hookup would do gears for $250..installed/total. only 4.10 and 3.73 available which is fine w/ me

most shops want that for labor now

U-joints seem to be fine, it might be out of balance like you said though. I will be taking it down to the dealer next week and have it looked at and get a quote on rebuild kit and settle this. lol thanks for the help guys!
