Default plate under driveshaft

here's a noob question. what is the deal with that rusted bar bolted in front of the rear underneath the driveshaft ujoint? is there a purpose? can it come off? sorta looks something like a driveshaft loop...thanks

I believe that is the surface for the pinion snubber to contact on? could be wrong though

Yes it can be removed.

+1 to it being a vibration dampener if its the part just forward of the diff. if you put weight on/hang weight off of anything it absorbes vibrations. so yea you can take it off if you want to save 2lbs or if its a show car...but other than that, there's no real reason for it
