Problems starting the car...
So here is the thing. I helped my buddy do an exhaust system on his 92 GT. We get everything bolted back up and go to fire the car, and NOTHING! It makes a loud clacking noise. I checked the whole ignition system. All the wires are in the correct places. The coil is hooked up correctly. So I popped the dizzy cap cap and turned it over. The shaft doesnt turn when its turning over. I tried hooking up my coil and it still didnt work. So ive narrowed it down to 2 things. I think its either the dizzy gear broke or somethings up with the starter. The car ran fine before we worked on it. Any suggestions???

so what your saying is while cranking the motor over the distributor rotor is not turning at all right while cranking??? if that's the case....you need to pull distributor and see if the roll pin sheared???..if so why?? oil pump locked up?? you'll have to verify that when dizzy is out and rotate motor over by hand to make sure something isn't binding in the motor

I was gonna pull the dizzy tomorrow. It got dark so we called it a day. I dont understand why though. The car ran perfectly b4 we did the exhaust.
The rotor moves slightly when turning over, then stays still. The car sounds like it wants to crank at first, then comes the loud clacking.

does the motor turn over when you try and start it? from the way you make it sound, sounds like the motor's not turning over. Sounds like it's going to be starter, ring gear or block plate. Did you take out the starter when you put the exhaust on? I had all sorts of starting problems when I first built my car, all due to the block plate. Pulled the trans out to get the block plate out, was cracked, had it welded, put it back in, few starts later, same thing, grinded. Bought a new block plate, put that in. Worked for a few days, then again, grinding. Pulled the starter, ate the ring gear out. Put a new ring gear on the flywheel, started a few times, then again, same thing. Pulled starter out again, ate the starter gear... that was a pain in the ***. But you didn't remove the block plate, but maybe you didn't install the starter correctly, maybe you caught the bllock plate when you installed it and bent it... this is all if you removed the starter.

^^^^ I will pull the starter tomorrow first, and go from there.
DUH!!!! I even had cables to jump it and it still did it. Hopefully he just needs a new starter.
is the battery fully charged??
