Yes you can put a 4cyl t5 in a 5.0 mustang. You will run into a few problems though. You will need a V8 bellhousing (from your old transmission) and either an adapter bearing / bushing for the input shaft or replace the input shaft with a V8 one becauseinput shaft on the 4cyl T-5's are .590", on the V8's they are .668.

Also, the gear ratios are more aggressive, but 1st gear will be SOOO steep (4.3) that it won't be usable. Also the pre 1990 T-5 are really weak. I did some research for you and this is what I found:

1984 SVO T5 Gear ratio's

1st = 4.30

2nd = 2.37

3rd = 1.50

4th = 1.00

5th = 0.76

Torque Rating = 300 ft lbs

By comparison, a 1990+ T5 has a torque rating of 300 ft lbs (and we all know how weak they are at the track) with a 1st gear ratio of 3.35

Also, the World Class t5 has a torque rating of 330 ft lbs and a 1st gear ration of 2.95

The point I'm trying to make is that unless you have a 4cyl car and need to get going with low torque, don't use this tranny. You will have a horrible time driving around town and it won't live longbehind V8 torque.
