I ran the car today with 32 psi and it rode great. 40 psi made the car ride quite rough.

Too much pressure can also wear the tire unevenly.
True... On the flipside, too little pressure will also cause uneven wear . Usually anything b/t 30-40 won't hurtour tires. I know lots of people go into the 20s for the strip (I've heard it argued that it doesn't help as much on street tires, though)but I wouldn't run around on that all the time [8D].

I agree you have to have the proper amount of air in atire or you will either wear out the middle of the tire or you will wear the edges of tire out quicker, 32 gave the car a good ride, I would rather sacrifice a small amount of mileage instead of my body.

A tire's max pressure doesn't really mean anything except don't put more than that in the tire, it's not a recommendation about how much pressure to run in them. 32psi is probably right on the money.

hmm..i run about 30/28 front/back...thats with 275/40 on front n 315/35 on back...i chalked the tires n the wear pattern is even across the whole tire...my only problem with wear is the back lol..they seem to be going faster than the front for some "unknown" reason

Another reason to back up this statement is. The manufacture has no idea what car these tires are going onto. How can they recommend a pressure. Like Onyx said, it's only an upper saftey limit.
