Strange timing problem
Ok so i decided to try advancing the timing in my 84 mustang gt. I get under the car mark the 0 and the 2nd hashmark that represents 14* (4* advance). So i connect the timing light and point it at the pulley. Now above the pulley theres a piece of metal acting as a pointer im assuming? Either way theres a cut out semi circle part to it and then it rises to about half the width of the pulley to a kind of triangle point. Now everyone ive seen post says thats the pointer, but my problem is the mark i made on the 0 is in the semi circle. So in that case my car has been set at some ungodly degree for a while, but ive been running 87 and now ping or detonation? This makes no sense to me is it possible the semi circle cut out is the pointer for an 84?

RE: Strange timing problem
nope!! the tip of / end of the pointer is what you use to dial in timing.. the point or end of it needs to line up on 10 degrees when setting timing... that is 10 btdc mark 0 an 10 and set it from there.. if you like 14 so be it
