priming the new motor
hey guys im rebuilding my old school 351w, edelbrock says i have to prime the motor by using a drill attachment to the cam gear inside the dizzy hole. ive never done this, can you guys give me a little info on how to prime the motor up after i put the goodies back on it

RE: priming the new motor
Some reccomend putting an old dizzy shaft without the gear on a drill, sliding it onto the oil pump drive and running the drill. I just used a socket with a speed wrench and did it by hand. Good excercise. The idea though is to turn the oil pump until oil has been pumped through the entire engine.

Spend 20 bones on a priming tool...order one from summit or local spd shop often has them. Drop the tool in the dist hole and align on pump. Place the drill onto the primer and tighten...PUT DRILL IN REVERSE...you need to run in reverse to ensure you build pressure, running clockwise will not damage anything but does not engage in the correct direction. Run the drill for several minutes after you start to feel resistance (oil pressure) in the drill. Ensure good pressure on your OP gauge (buddy in car checking gauge) and run as long as your comfortable...tada...primed. Instert disb correctly and feel safe starting the car.

many tool stores, hardware stores.. etc will have a 1/4" attachment that will fit into a standard 3/8" drill. you can then attach an extension, and deep 1/4" socket... put it in reverse, and prime away

I always use a socket on an extension with an adaptor down for a 1/4" ratchet so it'll fit in the chuck of my drill. Call me paranoid, but I also duct tape the socket/extension together just in case so nothing falls down.
