Lack of shims will not cause this much IMO. I would start to look at the cam and or distributor. What cam, how was it installed (retarded, dot-to-dot, advanced), and was it degreed? What kind of distributor (TFI)? Are you sure its stabbed properly.
what you talking about stabbing? it's a trfs stage 1 cam dot to dot not degreed but i didn't have this problem before i re built it. it's a 94 gt stock dizzy and i know that the balancers can spin but this one has a professional products balancer on it and i'm pretty sure it hasn't spun i tried to check it and it seemed to be no movement in it i have run a koeo on it but i can't remember what it said other than the tps voltage to low and something about the ect and egr of course but its deleted but again i didn't have these problems til after i rebuilt it i'll check the koeo codes on it again

you do realise when you switch cams it changes your power band right? My car didn't fell as torquey down low after my HCI swap (pretty much all the same stuff as you) but after 2500-3000 rpms' it just screams

1- What I mean by by stabbing is, are you sure the distributor is installed correctly and not a tooth off.

2- Check the codes again

3- Check your TPS voltage, it will cause poblems

I believe it sounds like a timing problem since were getting popping in the intake, as for your professional products balancer ive heard its crap and they split in two pieces "I havent experianced it first hand". Is your valvetrain noisy? did you adjust the valves correctly?
