Don't get discouraged now. You are close. Take your time and do it right. This is def one of the most hateful jobs on a foxbody. In the end, you'll be glad you did. And you'll still have that money in you pocket!!

by the way guys, if i disconnect the a/c dryer and undo the nut leading into the firewall, will that allow the hvac case to come out?

Followed the directions from mustang monthly on how to replace heater core. Im about half way through. The dash is off of the firewall, but some cable seems to be holding the dash close to the firewall.
Its a gray cable going to the Instrument Cluster. I'm guessing its the speedometer cable. I need more room to access the heater core. If it isthe speedo cable, how can I disconnect it. There seems to be some plastic clip in the back of the cluster on the end of the cable, but not sure how to go about it, and certainly do not want to break anything. Any suggestions?
Here are some pics.

Tips:
you may want to remove the cluster and disconnect the speedo cable before removing the dash. I had to put the dash back and remove the cluster to get better access to the cable retainer to get more room.
Also I'd remove the bottom bolt of the HVAC case Before lowering the dash as well. It's located in the passanger side under the dash at the top of the carpet close to the trans tunnel. Not sure if it's accessable with the dash connected, but it was a bitch twisting and turning around the lowered dash.
Give yourself at least a long weekend. Good luck.

RE: Changing heater core, Dash is off, Speedo cable holding me up???
Update:
Ok, so I managed to pry open the hvac case with a loooong screw driver and slid a piece of wood on the right side of the case to keep it open. On the other side I slid a socket into place giving me about 2.5 -3 inches clearance...just about enough to slide the heater core out.
It seemed as though the foam insulator around the core tubes at the firewall were holding it up so I put some lube around the tube, used a flathead screw driver to help pry it around the tube, went back inside and pulled and AT LAST...the old core is out!!!!
I'm just glad I didn't have to disconnect the A/C and/or cut the HVAC case open.
Tried my best to clean the heater box of antifreeze. There is a plastic divider that is connected to the Temp Control cable. It is surrounded in foam that is soaked with antifreeze. I used paper towels to soak up most of it (on both sides) and wiped down the inside. Now I'm letting it air dry with the help of a lightbulb.
I took some pics so if anyone needs pics let me know and I'll post. I know it really helps to see things clearly before trying it, at least for me.
