is the Lobe seperation angle what determines how lopey a cam will sound at idle, The lower the lsa the more lopey?? sorry for asking stupid questions but i'm trying to gett all this stuff straight before choosing my cam.

Smaller LSA will generally make it lopier at idle, and will also tend to make more peak power in a narrower rpm range(preferable in a race car). Wider LSA tends to lope less and make less peak power, but produces power over a wider rpm range(preferable in a street car). Cam duration will also determine how lopey a cam may be, along with the intake valve closing point.
I'd advise against picking a cam just cuz it sounds mean, as that can lead to an agressive sounding peaky cam that produces craptastic bottom end power, resulting in a street car that falls on it's face. Even a good cam that makes solid, streetable power over a wide rpm range can sound decent.

It has to do with the overlap and the timing of the valve events. You can have a 114 LSA cam sound as "mean" as a 110 LSA cam....... or a 112 LSA sound "meaner" than a 110 LSA cam. For example.... B/E/X -303 cams have the same overlap at .050" lift..... but the B/Xcams sound "lopier" (if that's a word).... even though their LSA is 112, and the E-303 is 110..... but their valve events and duration are different......that's at the "cam level"..... add heads, engine CID's, etc..... and they will all sound different. Anyway, sound is a "result"... it shouldn't be a "goal"... as 67mustang302 already mentioned. I would rather have a stock sounding cam running 11's.... than a "lopey" sounding cam running 13's....... the sleeper effect.

Yeah, this is true, but nobody can dissagree with the fact that a lopey cam sounds really awesome. It could be a goal, as long as maximum power output isn't. But you can also compromise some, a cam that makes great power can be designed to sound great too.

i have a xe270hr-114 cam in my 331, stock exhaust w/ gutted cats and equal lengths, that thing sounds pretty mean for stock mufflers. its got a good lope around 600rpms, and still a tad noticible at 1k. 218intake 224 exhaust duration and .512 lift. 1800-5800rpms (advertised) at 3k it wakes up big time and pulls freakin hard till 6k, i havent gone any further yet.

The sound isnt the only thing i'm looking for in a cam i want it to make good power but i woiuld still prefer that it had a noticible lope to it, but i will settle for a non lopey cam if thats what will make the most power for my combo, i think i gonna call comp cams and talk to one of their techs and tell him what i have and get them to hook me up wth a custom grind i think thats gona be the best deal for me, What do you guys think?
