Default Bouncing speedo guage

I was wondering what I can do to fix my speedo needle boncing problem. It seems to level off, once up to speed, but there it could bounce all the way to 80mph and back. I have the right speedometer gear in my tranny for the rear gears. It is also soild and no problems at the tranny. Its is also connected tightly to the guage. Maybe the cable is bad or just needs to be lubed? Anyone else have this problem and what did you do to fix it? Thanks for any responses.

It is normal for the speedo to bounce a little at slower speeds but it sounds like yours is like mine. Mine bounces to 40 or where ever when I let of the brake to start rolling. I have to replace my cluster. I have a brand new speedo cable and the gear is perfect shape so it is in your cluster. You may be able to find info on taking it apart and fixing it but it would prolly be easier to find another one.

No, it's not normal. Mine doesn't bounce at all. The first thing I would try is lubing the speedo cable. You have to disconnect it from the head, pull the cable out of the sheathing, grease the cable and reassemble.

After that, look to the speedo gears and lastly, the speedo head.

mine was fine until i put the 3:55 speedo gear inand then it bounces all the way up until 40 then it levels off. i've been told to lube the cable, just haven't done it yet. plan on doing it when i rebuild the engine and add the hci next week.

Chances are it has something to do w/ that. Have you tried reinstalling the old one to see if the problem stops? Just some food for thought

Yeah I've done that on both ends but haven't lubed the cable. I hope that will fix it.

Just for the info. The instructions that came with my new cable said NOT to lube the ends. The only thing that will help is inserting the cable. The ends don't spin in its place. The are squared off to lock into the cluster and gear.

That does nothing. The cable must be removed from the sheathing as I've already stated.

Why do you need to know how fast you are going anyway? People can already see it's a Mustang. JK, but check the gear on the sensor in your tranny, I ruined a brand new one in about 2 weeks. I just got used to the speedo going up and down. See if the teeth on the gear are still in good condition.
